Thai at The Travellers in Holmesfield

Situated in the pictureque village of Holmesfield is The Travellers Rest, formerly a traditional village pub, until Chris Wragg and his Thai wife, Keng, established the excellent award-winning Thai at the Travellers Restaurant, and has maintained its excellent reputation for the last 5 1/2 years.  There are five full-time Thai staff, as well as regular student staff, who spend their weekends working for Chris and Keng, who have been commissioned by the Thai Government to study at Sheffield University in various areas of engineering, medicine, micro-biology and dentistry.

Keng grew up in a village on the famous river kwai, where her father was a doctor and farmer. As a child, she helped her mother sell noodles from a small stall. Working on the farm, she earned money towards her elder sister’s education. Having saved a little money, Keng opened a shop selling a wide range of goods.   Whilst running this business, Keng paid her way through college with glowing distinctions. At 27, she met and later married, Chris Wragg - a business man with links to the Holmesfield area. After working in Thai restaurants throughout the area, learning the restaurant trade, Keng opened Thai at the travellers together with her husband Chris.

On entering the restaurant, there is a traditional bar area with chrome stools and comfortable leather sofas where you can have an aperatif, glass of wine or a Thai beer before your meal or, alternatively if you are not dining, you are welcome to just call in and enjoy a drink amongst the exotic eastern decor and bronze and gold statues of Buddah and the sacred elephants.  If Keng and Chris are available, they are always happy to talk about their different cultures and offer interesting topics for discussion.

There is a full a la carte menu available, as well as set menus recommended to suit newcomers.

Since moving into The Travellers in 2002, both Chris and Keng have been awarded the Westside Restaurant of the Year, and have been nominated once again for the award this year.  In addition, they carry the prestigious Thai Select award from the Thai Government, which is awarded to only 60 out of 1100 Thai restaurants, based on authenticity, presentation, origin of chefs, and of course the food.

To maintain authenticity, the herbs and spices and Thai vegetables are imported directly from Thailand - however to keep the local links, all meat is sourced locally - the poultry is farmed right here in Holmesfield and the Pork, Lamb and Beef are delivered directly from the Devonshire Estate in Derbyshire.

Thai people are very spiritual, and celebrate religious festivals regularly.  On passing the Travellers on an evening, you will often see the girls gathered around the Spirit House (pictured above) to offer gifts of food and drink, which has been cooked during the evening, to give thanks to their ancestors.

In Thailand the white elephant is considered sacred as it is said that when Buddah was born he was transported to earth on a white elephant - for more tasters of Thai knowledge make your next night out at The Thai at the Travellers - you won't be disappointed.  Alternatively, if time is of the essence, you can order a takeaway from the menu at a discount of 15%.
