HARVEST TIME REAPS REWARDS FOR PUPILS

HARVEST TIME REAPS REWARDS FOR PUPILS
Harvest time truly arrived at St Andrew’s C.E. Methodist Aided Primary School in Dronfield, where pupils were rewarded with the fruits of their hard labour, by being presented with the BRONZE award in the Schools category for their working kitchen garden, presented by the prestigious Dronfield In Bloom committee.

Headteacher, John Clapham, said, “the pupils were really keen to have a working garden in school and so, 3 years ago, a student working party was formed, and the children (in their own words) put together a successful application for a local authority grant, for which they were awarded a sum of £4,000.

Each year since then, children have been enthusiastically involved in looking after a number of raised beds (one for each year from reception class to year 6!).

This year’s project started in May with the planting of seeds.  Driven on by a small number of pupils in years 5 and 6, the children tended to the raised beds at least every other day during their lunch break, come rain or shine, and were great role models and ambassadors for getting the younger children involved too.

Sophie Hoyes said, “It was really hard work but very rewarding to see what we had grown from seed. We are really proud of what we have achieved.”  Will Jones added, “The peas that we grew were delicious – much nicer than shop bought ones”.  Other vegetables included lettuce, carrots, spinach and runner beans.

The children agreed that working in the gardens helped them learn about the health and nutritional benefits of growing their own vegetables, as well as appreciating the life cycle of plants.  And what’s more – their market garden has produced sales of fresh vegetables to family and friends, as well as supplying the school kitchen!

All of the above has contributed to St Andrew’s achieving The Healthy Schools Award, as well being worthy bronze winners of Dronfield In Bloom.  And watch this space ... as next year the pupils may well be going for gold!!

The award was presented to the pupils at a ceremony held at The Dronfield Civic Centre.
