About the Society
Founded in 1984 by a small group who met to pursue their common interest in organs and the enjoyment of making music, NEDOS has grown over the years to become one of the UK's foremost organ societies with over 200 members. Members meet fortnightly at the Markham Hall, Staveley, near Chesterfield.
The word "Organ Society" continues to conjure up in many people's minds the image of a church pipe organ and our members singing hymns! That could not be further from the truth. The instruments featured at our concerts are modern state of the art electronic multi-keyboard instruments (see the picture of the white organ featured here) often costing many thousands of pounds and the music they produce is modern, tuneful and lively with sounds ranging from a full symphony orchestra to a big band, jazz band or even a choir!
On the third Wednesday of every month (commencing at 8:00pm) the society presents a concert in the Markham Hall. There is a licensed bar and refreshments are served during the interval. We take great pride in the quality of our artistes, our professional presentation and friendly welcome and our concerts, which feature nationally and internationally renowned stars of the organ world as well as some up-and-coming young stars of the future, regularly attract visitors from South and West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and often even further afield.
Each year our concert programme is carefully planned to include a variety of artistes whose contrasting musical styles and sounds vary from orchestral and light classics through to jazz, big-band and the familiar sounds of the Mighty theatre organ. However, we do try to avoid serious classical recitals, Rap and Heavy Metal! It is usual for our artistes to supply their own equipment, which then also provides our audiences with the opportunity to hear a variety of instruments.
In addition to our regular concerts NEDOS also regularly arranges special concerts to raise funds for charity and several have been held at The Civic Hall in Dronfield so far raising over £6,000 for Ashgate Hospital.
There is no commitment to join or requirement for any musical knowledge or skills other than the enjoyment of good tuneful music! - Everyone is welcome and we are always particularly pleased to welcome visitors young and old.
