About the Charity
We are currently endeavouring to raise money for heart research for babies and children - paediatric cardiac research - at The Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary (Formerly The Killingbeck Hospital, Leeds) and for the Special Care Baby Unit at Chesterfield Hospital.
Our fund is called “Melanie’s Fund”, after our baby daughter, Melanie, born in September 1993 suffering from a congenital heart abnormality, and who died during a pioneering operation carried out in an effort to save her life. The money we are raising in her memory will fund research into new and better operations at The Yorkshire Heart Centre, for children all over the region with life-threatening heart problems.
We have now raised well over £13,000 and are always looking for new ways of fundraising.
Not only is the intention to save lives, but also to improve the quality of those lives, and to minimize and eliminate traumatic open heart surgery, performing where possible, microsurgery techniques.
We also donate a proportion of funds to SCBU at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, without whose initial care babies would not survive beyond birth. The money buys essential and expensive new "high tech" equipment to increase babies chances of survival, especially in the critical first few days.
