Residents are being urged to leave a light on - and put the burglars off – as part of a burglary-reduction initiative in the run-up to Christmas.
Free automatic light timers, along with calling cards bearing the slogan ‘your house was left in darkness, if we noticed, a burglar would,’ are being left at homes across North East Derbyshire.
Called Operation Radiance, the initiative is being run by NE Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership as part of the wider Safe, Secure and Responsible campaign to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
Cllr Peter Riggott, Member with responsibility for Community Safety, said: “Now that the nights are drawing in people need to remember that a house left in darkness is an easy target for burglars.
“Our Community Safety Partnership team has been out in force, identifying the houses which look unoccupied and raising awareness of the simple steps that people can take to protect their home.”
The initiative is one of dozens running as part of the Safe, Secure and Responsible campaign – launched to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, and boost pride in NE Derbyshire’s communities.
