About the Helpline

GamCare became operational in April 1997 to pioneer a national approach to the social impact of gambling. GamCare has become the leading authority on the provision of information, advice and practical help in addressing the social impact of gambling in the UK. GamCare aims to develop strategies that will improve the understanding of the social impact of gambling, promote a responsible approach to gambling, address the needs of those adversely affected by a gambling dependency.


GamCare does not wish to restrict the choices or opportunities for anyone to operate, or engage in gambling activities that are legally available in the UK. However the organization is concerned about the damage gambling can do to some people's lives and has a commitment to reduce further damage by promoting responsible attitudes to gambling and to work for the provision of proper care for those who have been harmed by a gambling dependency. GamCare's key services include the following.

  • A national helpline for problem gamblers and their families.
  • Providing social education, problem prevention and information programmes, training courses and workshops.
  • Maintaining a national network of members.
  • Producing information through newsletters, booklets, media outlets etc.
  • Providing a counselling service, and face-to-face counselling in its London office.
  • Promoting and providing funding for relevant research projects.
  • Being a responsible body for consultation with government over matters relating to the social impact of gambling.
  • Working with gaming and betting trade organizations to develop understanding and areas of mutual co-operation.
  • Education workshops.
Membership of GamCare's Network of Friends is for organizations and individuals who are actively seeking to promote a responsible attitude to gambling and ensure safeguards for gambling activities. It is also available for those who are affected by a gambling problem or who provide support for those addicted to gambling.
