Details

Dronfield Junior School is the oldest and largest junior school in Dronfield. Built in 1875 the stone building has in 1995 been modernised and extended and is now extremely well equipped, with 10 classrooms, a hall, a computer room, a music, arts and drama studio, a modern and well stocked library and a resource room ('The Den’) with cooking facilities.

Great efforts have been made to develop the school environment and many of the improvements have won local and national awards. The Governors have also undertaken a comprehensive review of safety and security, and were successful in securing a grant towards implementing the changes and improvements thought necessary.

The school has 2 spacious playgrounds and a school field, which have been modernised and developed to provide a wide variety of play and sports facilities as well as quiet areas with giant chess, sculptured seating, a sunshade, an adventure playground and a wildlife area. The most important resource any school has, of course, is the staff.

Dronfield Junior School is fortunate in having dedicated, experienced and enthusiastic teachers who make the most of the facilities, both within the school day offering a broad, balanced curriculum, and after school hours with numerous clubs and activities. There is an excellent choir, music groups, art, drama and dance clubs which together put on musicals and concerts – and the children particularly enjoy the regular discos. The Arts Room is particularly well equipped with audio-visual facilities, including DVD surround sound cinema and theatre lighting.

The computer room is well equipped – the school has an IT suite with 18 modern networked PCs, and an additional networked PC in every classroom. The computer room has been fitted with a projector to enable all pupils to clearly see programs being demonstrated, as well as an electronic interactive whiteboard. There are many colour printers, digital cameras, scanners and a wide variety of software programs.

Every child has regular access to the computers and the Internet in lesson time and in lunchtime computer clubs, and the quality of work produced is testimony to the success of this department. The school was featured in BBC’s Webwise programmes for its progressive approach to using ICT equipment and the school web site won a major award as the best school web site in the South Yorkshire area.
