Drifters Blown Away by a Storm

Drifters Blown Away by a Storm

The Dronfield Drifters went back on the road this week travelling to table toppers Leicester Storm. With an everage age of 29 the Drifters faced a much younger Storm team (average age 19) and the age difference was the tlling factor as three late tries took the game away from the Drifters as they lost 32-6.

The first 20 minutes were a true arm wrestle as each team traded tackles before Leicester broke the deadlock on the 20 minute mark. This arm wrestle would prove to drain too much from a Drifters side playing with no substitues compared to Storm's 5.

Storm scored a second before a great delayed pass by Sam Clews sent over Steve Wood for a try converted by Vinny Caldwell. Storm quickly took back their 12 point advantage with a try on the stroke of half time to lead 18-6 at the break.

The second half started with the Drifters dominating with Mark Slatter, Alby Atkinson and Rich Pitchfork all held up just short of the line, Ben Hepworth fund an Andy Gwilliam pass just out of his reach with a run in secure while Nick Roberst was unlucky to be pulled back twice by a last ditch tackle when finding himself through a gap with the line open.

It then came as a bitter blow when on one of these close calls the referee gave a penalty and quick thinking and running from the young Storm side saw a long distance try scored to shatter the Drifters hearts, and very tired legs. 2 of the Storm's 16 year olds found the Drifter's tackling wilting in the heat as they side stepped round some very tired forwards to score two quick fire tries at the death to give Storm the 32-6 lead.

"We are still 2 good results away from the play offs with 2 matches to go in the regular season." Commented Chariman Mark Slatter. "It was another great match played in a great spirit and another team wanting to play us again when the league is over as they enjoyed the game so much. Age took its toll but we are thoroughly enjoying the season and making friends as we do with the way we are playing. Its great that the other teams are enjoying playing us also, the league is great to be in, we are pleased with the progress made in what is for many our first campain for 2-3 years."

Next week the Drifters travel to Sleaford for a 2.30 kick off.
