The Cross Daggers is probably one of the best kept secrets in the Dronfield area.
The 19th Century pub has been home to Landlord, Anthony Hutchison since 2000, and proudly carries the Cask Mark Accreditation for excellent beer management.
As well as this, the venue, is a 'proper' village pub, oozing great atmosphere, welcoming ambiance, and outstanding cleanliness. Attention to detail is everything in Anthony's estimation - from service, to transparency: a quirky feature is a window he has installed into the floor in the bar, where customers can see clearly the casks in the cellar.
Apart from a weekly quiz on Monday nights, the Daggers prides itself on 7 nights of civilised conversation - no loud music, poker, club acts or karaoke. An established musician and member of a working band, Anthony is fully conversant with music quality - any occasional music at the Cross Daggers is surely to be of the easy listening accoustic variety, which blends superbly into the make up and ambiance of the pub.
Customers wanting to enjoy live entertainment will find it across the road at the Royal Oak, which also belongs to Anthony. The Oak, (affectionately known as 'The Pond') has a more regular line up of music and comedy for all to enjoy.
The Cross Daggers is one of the few establishments left in Dronfield to proudly display the Coal Aston Parish Roll Call from the First World War. Being an enthusiast of local history, Anthony is happy to chat about his knowledge of Dronfield History, particularly relating to the pubs around the area. If you thought The Cross Daggers gets its name from some old historic feud - think again! Next time you pass by, call in and ask Anthony!!!
The Daggers really lends itself to the Coal Aston community - from the chickens who roam freely around the garden, to the landlord who will happily dress as the Innkeeper for Dronfield's re-enactment of the Journey to Bethlehem at Christmas time (What a Showman!!!!).
