A bit about Bluebell Wood…
Bluebell Wood is building a dedicated children’s hospice to serve over 200 children in the South Yorkshire/North Midlands region with life-limiting and terminal conditions. In a positive, fun and friendly environment we will provide love, encouragement and practical help to support families throughout many years of a child’s life. We will help children and families living in the Dronfield area, like that of little Thomas’. In the first few days of his life Thomas suffered from brain damage which means that he has no mobility, does not speak and needs constant care to meet his needs. With two older brothers still at home Thomas’ Mum and Dad run a very busy household!
Helping the family…
We understand the enormous pressure that the families are under caring for a life-limited child 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – imagine being like Thomas’ Mum and never having had a full nights sleep for a whole decade! Bluebell Wood will give the family the opportunity to share their experiences, anxieties and thoughts with others in the same situation. We will offer respite care to the whole family, and give them the opportunity to do ‘normal’ things, such as go swimming. We will give families the chance to have some real fun and a chance to re-charge batteries.
Hospice facilities…
To meet the children’s physical needs specialised facilities will be in each room, such as in the bedrooms; electric cots/beds, overhead tracking for hoist equipment, en-suite bathroom facilities with adjustable sinks and baths. To meet the children’s psychological needs there will be age appropriate books, DVD’s, and music, and touch screen computers linked to other children’s hospices around the country. The children will also be able to relax in the Jacuzzi, be stimulated in the sensory room or music room or simply have fun in the messy play area! There will be specialist therapists on hand for the children and families alike.
Where we are at…
Thanks to the overwhelming support of the community we cut the first sod of earth to start building Bluebell Wood on October 5th this year. It is costing in excess of £4million to build the hospice. On the same day we launched our new ‘Up and Running’ appeal to raise £3million to fit and furnish the hospice. This money will also be used to start a Community Nursing Team which will offer at home care to the families – we have not and will not receive any government funding towards these costs. It will take approximately 18months to build Bluebell Wood and once up and running will cost £1.8million (and rising) per year to run. For this we will receive less than 4% in government funding so we’ll need the support of the community to keep us going.
