Asbestos Awareness

Asbestos Awareness Company/Association: NLT Training
BECOMING ASBESTOS AWARE CAN SAVE LIVES

It is a startling fact that every week 20 tradesmen die from asbestos-related diseases across the UK.  In the past 17 years there have been 225 recorded deaths of people from Derbyshire from asbestos-linked diseases, according to recent research carried out by the Health & Safety Executive.  Anyone who has carried out work on a building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000, might have been exposed to asbestos, without even knowing it.

NLT Training Services, based in Chesterfield, has seen a marked increase in demand for its Asbestos Awareness health and safety courses.  The next course, which runs on 23rd January, is designed to make employees, who may be liable to disturb asbestos in their working lives, aware of the associated risks.  The course covers the regulations relating to asbestos use, an explanation of what asbestos is, what the harmful effects of asbestos are, where you might find asbestos, how to avoid exposure to it and the types of surveys that can be carried out to identify asbestos prior to work on any building being started.  (don’t want to add much to this sentence as it is long enough already – all the main trades are mentioned in the next para)

The course is relevant for anyone in a construction-related trade, including general maintenance staff, plasterers, painters and decorators, roofers and scaffolders, plumbers, gas fitters, electricians, joiners, building surveyors and heating and ventilation engineers, to name but a few.

Peter Minto, health and safety training officer for NLT Training Services, explains: “Asbestos is known as the ‘hidden killer’ as it cannot normally be seen but was widely used as a popular building material before it was banned in 2000.  Many employers have recognised that they have a duty of care to their staff to learn more about asbestos and how to avoid its life-threatening effects.  The course is all about raising awareness about how to keep both themselves and their fellow workers protected.”

NLT Training Services is advising companies across the region to check and, if necessary, update their Health & Safety procedures, as the new Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act, which came into force 6th April 2008, could mean that employers are held liable for any employee who becomes ill due to coming into contact with asbestos.

Peter Minto continues: “By following the course, the aim is that both employers and their workers will be more aware of the risks and this will lead to a reduction in the number of deaths every year from asbestos-related illnesses.”

NLT Training Services has offices in Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, and offers an extensive range of health and safety training courses including; NEBOSH General Health & Safety Certificate, IOSH Managing Safely, IOSH Working Safely. CIEH Principles of Manual Handling, CIEH Risk Assessment, CIEH Principles of COSHH, Slinging & Lifting Techniques and Abrasive Wheel Safety.
