Antonio's Ristorante Italiano
Prepare to be instantly 'wowed!' when you walk into Antonio's at The Forge. You are instantly transported to a little bit of old Italy with its brick walls and stonework combined with modern stylish tablewear and decor. An authentic Italian ambiance is instantly present with the friendly welcome of Antonio and his staff and the subtle background music by the Italian-American classics Sinatra, and Martin.
Comfortable leather sofas greet you when you enter the bar area, where you can order aperatifs and enjoy friendly chit chat and banter with staff before being shown to your table.
Antonio's is stylish and upmarket, but most importantly, the atmosphere is truly Italian - everyone is made to feel welcome - whether you are calling in for a quick pasta or pizza, or making a full evening of it and taking advantage of ordering three gourmet courses plus wine. As Antonio says, "if I call up my mother and say I have friends calling in for ten minutes, the first thing she will say is 'I will put more pasta on!' ". And that is his philosophy.
Born in Monte Falcione, close to Italy's Amalfi Coast, Antonio started out his business in Newbold as a takeaway chef, where he qualified for the Pizza and Pasta Association's prestigious national 'Takeaway of the Year' final. He was awarded a "Highly Commended" certificate which was presented by TV's Roy Walker. After a year of careful planning, Antonio opened his restaurant doors at The Forge in March of this year and concentrates mainly on Front of House, leaving the kitchen to highly acclaimed Head Chef, his brother-in-law, Paolo.
All the dishes are prepared freshly on the premises, including the dough for the Pizzas, and range from family pasta dishes to beautiful A La Carte Italian dishes of seafood, steak, duck and lamb - yes lamb! Antonio is often asked why there is a lamb dish on an Italian menu, to which he will reply with tongue in cheek and a wide grin, "yes we do have sheep in Italy!" And fantastic the lamb is too - we called in for the first time a few weeks ago. I ordered Stinko Pugliese, a shank of lamb with garlic & capers in a red wine sauce on a bed of herb mash. Stuart ordered his all time favourite Veal Massala, escalope of veal in a massala wine and cream sauce, which met all expectations. Accompanied by roast potatoes and fresh vegetables, together with a bottle of Fiano di Avellino wine (bottled in Antonio's home village in Italy and imported specially by him) made for a superb meal and fantastic evening.
So much so that we returned a couple of weeks later with the kids for a tea-time family pasta meal, which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
Antonio has a few plans up his sleeve for future events at the restaurant to enhance further your dining experience - keep a watchful eye on The Whats On Guide for details.
