Apperknowle, near Dronfield, in Derbyshire gains it's name from the Old English word Apelknol, meaning 'Apple Tree Hill'. Set up on the hills it looks down upon Dronfield and the Drone Valley and offers some breathtaking views across the countryside towards the Peak District.

Home to Aperknowle Cricket Club, who play on what must be one of the most interesting grounds in England (a six looks like it would carry wayout across the the countryside into the Peak district).

There is also a local Methodist Church, which was opened in 1879 to replace an earlier building. It is the only place of worship in the village and often hosts visitng preachers from other local churches in and around the Sheffield area.

The local hostelry The Barrack Hotel provides a range of beers and spirits to wet the whistle of any hardy rambler who happens upon the village of Apperknowle.

Apperknowle is a bit of a local enigma. Scouring the internet for information on this small village, near Dronfield, little could be found out about it, save for what is already written here. There must be more to Apperknowle than is currently available for all to read on the web.
